Michigan Friday: Good Weekend For a Bye

The Ryder Cup has not started out well for the Team USA, they are going to struggle to find a 1/2 to a full point in the first session.  The USA team has been playing nervous and not making any putts.   

Lots of golf left, but not a good start for the home team.  

Still great football to watch this weekend as the Wolverines heal up for the rest of the Big Ten season.

Michigan Tuesday: More Guys Leaving Via The Portal

As we get deeper and deeper into Spring Practice, some players are seeing the writing on the wall that they are not going to see the field and maybe never will in Ann Arbor.   So they set their sites on the Spring Portal and hope to find a landing spot. 

DE Aymeric Koumba - Has a really cool name, came from France has a high upside but that upside won't be realized in Ann Arbor.  Good Luck to him. 

CB Ja'Den McBurrows - Has been in the program along time.  He has battled injuries good players in front of him and of course the tunnel incident.  Michigan needs depth at CB so the young guys must be really impressing in camp.  Rumors are Berry, Curtis, Metcalf and Lowe are all competing at Nickel right now. 

LB Jason Hewlett - Was an Ohio based recruit in the 23 class that must not have seen a path to the field. 

I 100% understand McBurrows but the other two guys probably needed more time in the program.   Michigan could use 1 or 2 more experienced CB's in the portal. 

• Mason Graham and Will Johnson will attend the NFL Draft in person.  There has been some buzz that Will Johnson might drop because he hasn't run the 40 due to his injury. 

• Also over the weekend, Michigan Basketball had its own portal trade if you will.  Dusty brought in 7'3 Aday Mara from UCLA and lost Phat Phat Brooks to the portal.  Phat Phat clearly didn't want to spend a few years on the bench while he waited for the path to clear to the court. 

• What happened at Tennessee over the weekend is just crazy.  I wonder which program is going to risk that situation with Nico at their most important position. 

• RIP to former LSU WR Lacy, he seemed troubled and would've gotten drafted with out his recent issues. 

• JT Vance broke Ohio State's National Championship Trophy.  I love that OSU is putting out statements like, the best run in college football history.  There isn't a Ohio State fan alive that doesn't think that run isn't tainted after the loss to Michigan. 

• Michigan is off the list for #1 recruit in the 2026 class OT Jackson Cantwell.  I guess the bag wasn't big enough. 

• Max Crosby will continue to be an NFL DE and also the GM of Eastern Michigan Football. 

Michigan Thursday: Big 10 Media Days at the End of the Month

The Big Ten Media days start at the end of the month and Michigan is sending the following players.  

• Which player has the highest grade in the new release of EA College Football?  Will Johnson is the highest graded player.  Cover Boy Donovan Edwards is ranked #49. 

• Southwest has been named the official airlines of the SEC.  Does that mean each team needs to fly Southwest to games?  Sorry coach you are not in A25. 

• Purdue has new football jerseys, they look like the old football jerseys. 

• TX 2025 four-star CB Jayden Sanders confirms his official visit for the BBQ at the Big House.

Michigan Thursday: SEC Schedule Is Scary

Oklahoma and Texas are packing up their stuff and moving to the SEC in 2024.  They're leaving the Big 12 high and dry for the money and exposure the SEC can bring them.  You know what else the SEC is going to do for both of them? Maybe a ton of more losses than these programs are used to.

Michigan Monday: Heisman a QB Award

The Heisman Trophy ceremony continues to be a QB award and Caleb Williams took home the trophy on Saturday.   Blake finishing 7th is criminal as he would have won the trophy if he hadn't hurt his knee and had the yards Donovan Edwards had in the OSU and Big Ten Championship.  Out of all the guys in the top 7, who had the best final game?  Blake had 100 yards in the first half before hurting his knee.  

• Reports are that Mike Leach is in critical condition after a medical event on Sunday.   Mike is a national treasure and I hope he makes it through. 

• Michigan Coaches are on the road to try to firm up the 2023 class days before the early signing period.  Michigan has had a ton of success on the field but the 20th ranked class in 2023.  The reason? New coordinators and larger NIL at other programs.  There were also a number of official visitors this weekend.  

• Hutch has 2 sacks and DPJ over a 100-yards receiving on Sunday. 

• There is a movement that OU and Texas could join the SEC a year early and we should know in a month if they will join for the 2024 season. 

• MSU is losing a number of recruits in both the 23 and 24 class.   Their 2023 class is down to 10 players, on the good side most of them are 4 stars. 

• Stanford hired the Sacramento State coach and now the Navy head coaching job is open after losing to Army and a losing record this season. 

• The Purdue search has been pretty quiet.  Todd Monken might be a candidate (Georgia OC).

• Hello to PWO Cole Morgan from NJ.  Cole is a 285-pound offensive lineman.  His name sounds like a Michigan Man; Cole Morgan!

• Texas Basketball head coach Chris Beard has been arrested on a domestic abuse charge.

Michigan Tuesday: Rest and Disrespect

In the Harbaugh era at Michigan, I rarely disagreed with Jimmy on game strategy.  Yes, there have been a few time management mistakes and I'm often critical of the offensive play calling.  He did hold on to Don Brown way too long.  So maybe I've been more critical than I thought.

With that said, last Saturday's game was shocking to me.  First off, it's hard to know if any injury reports are ever true coming out of Schembechler Hall, but the consensus was that Morris, Schoonmaker, and Edwards could have easily played on Saturday.  Then Corum runs out of bounds on a long run and gets hurt later in the game, but plays one snap in the 2nd half.   The offense on Saturday, wasn't just vanilla it was French Vanilla (is that more vanilla, then vanilla?).  

Michigan ends up playing walk-on RB's and throwing to a true freshman TE.  While they're losing the game!   Michigan ends up winning on a Jake Moody field goal, as the Wolverines find a way to beat Illinois prior to Ohio State.  

There could be very valid reasons for what happened and it's only fair to give that side of the story as well. 

• The players held out, might have needed one more week.   
• Corum after running into the line and getting 5 or so yards in the 2nd half, knew he couldn't go. 
• Running out of bounds down the sideline, was because he thought the DB had an angle and was going to dive at his legs. 
• French Vanilla offense was on purpose to hide things from the Buckeyes. 
• This Saturday is way more important than last Saturday. 

Can both situations be true?  That Michigan thought they could beat Illinois with their 4th and 5th string RB's and wanted their injured players to heal for one more week? A bit of disrespect for Illinois and rest for healthy players against Ohio State.  

Either way, that is a dangerous game Jimmy was playing and it worked out for him last weekend.  Also, a sign that a Big Ten Championship and win against OSU is way more important than a CFP invite. 

Some early thoughts about this weekend. 

I have a friend, that I have mentioned before on the blog named Augusta J, he always likes to shoot me a text during the game on how many sacks Michigan has had during the game.  It's usually a good thing, as the Wolverines seem to get one, right after he sends the text.   Would you be surprised to learn, Michigan had 0 sacks against Illinois on Saturday.  That is a terrible sign going into OSU.  Michigan won the game last year by doing 3 things.  

1. Running the ball in the bad weather 
2. Pressuring Stroud non-stop 
3. Designing a zone defense to stop the pass  

Michigan will have to do those 3 things at an elite level if they're going to leave Columbus with a W. 

I'm also disappointed where the passing game is at this point in the season.  JJ has had accuracy issues and the WR's are dropping catchable balls.  How many points did drops cost the Wolverines on Saturday? 14 or more?  Anthony, Wilson, and Gash all had drops that cost the Wolverines potential points.  Can't do that against the #2 team in the nation. 

Don't get me wrong, I'm over the moon happy Michigan is 11-0 and I have realistic outcome thoughts for Saturday.  Going into the season, we were concerned about pass rush and a balanced offense and now in Week 13 we're worrying about the same things. 

• Hooker is out for Tennessee, Hello Joe Milton. 

• There was a report on Twitter last night that Lane Kiffin was going to be named the next head coach of Auburn.  Lane quickly shot that down. 

• Michigan Basketball plays the fighting Coach Primetime's on Wednesday.  Let's hope for a better effort by Juwan's program.

• Can your squad give up 418 yards to one team and still win the Broyles award?  Manny Diaz is on the semi-finalist list.  Coach Minter is also on the list. 

• There is MAction tonight, don't sleep on BGSU and what the former Wolverine Scot Loeffler is building down there. 

Michigan Tuesday: Should We Be Worried About the Passing Game?

Michigan has an elite rushing attack, with two great running backs, a very strong offensive line, and a  quarterback that can run a 4.5.  Michigan ran both MSU and PSU out of the Big House.  Jimmy loves this type of football and his program is doing it at a high level right now.  At 246 yards per game, Michigan's rushing attack ranks #5 in the nation.  

Michigan's passing attack is another story, at 223 yards per it ranks 86th in the country.   While Jimmy is the head coach, if Michigan can win by running the ball they will.  The issue is, can Michigan beat Ohio State by just running the ball?  My guess is no.  

There have been a couple of issues in the passing game this year.  One, JJ has a live arm but at times can have accuracy issues.  Two, Michigan passes in very predictable times during the game (like on a 3rd and 7). 3rd, the deep ball has been non-existent in this offense.   This offense is designed to throw short and keep the chains moving.  That is why Schoonmaker is having a nice season.  Still, I would like to see more Roman Wilson, Andrel Anthony, and Ronnie Bell on deep crossing routes.   

The lack of passing game is also hurting Michigan scoring TD's in the Red Zone.  On those JJ sweeps, there needs to be a passing option to keep the DB's honest and give him more running yards to gain.  A secondary concern is that Cade is still out with an injury.  The back-up options are cloudy at best.  

Verdict: I'm moderately concerned.  We need to see that area of the offense get some more confidence and touchdowns.  Hopefully, that can be accomplished prior to the trip to Columbus. 

• Breaking News: Michigan Basketball just got a new commit in the 2023 class. 4-star SG George Washington III is now a Wolverine. (Former OSU commit)

• As I'm sure you know by now, there was another ABC/ESPN tunnel video released.  Seems MSU suspended mostly the right guys, but forget about their star LB Jacoby Windmon, who was involved in the Germon Green assault.  It's also fair to say, that there were a few MSU players trying to break it up and getting players into the locker-room.  

• Green has hired famous attorney Tom Mars and will be pressing charges 

• Harbaugh expects criminal charges filed

• Auburn fired its head coach on Halloween, the SEC has had 52 different head coaches since Saban was hired at Alabama. 

• There are 8 openings right now and the calendar is just turning to November.   How many will we have on 12/1?

• Michigan Hockey has the #1 team in the nation right now. 

• Georgia lost its highly ranked edge rusher Nolan Smith to a torn pectoral muscle, prior to the big game against Tennessee.  Florida threw Brenton Cox off the team on Monday. 

Michigan Thursday: Oklahoma and Texas on the Move?

There seems to be a lot of changes coming to NCAA Football.   NIL Rights are here and Alabama's QB who we have never heard of has got about a $1M in endorsements.   The playoff committee is finally waking up that just having Alabama, Clemson, OSU and one other team every year is pretty boring and might open it up to 12 teams.   

Now reports are that OU and Texas are interested in joining the SEC.   Both programs are mum about it and Texas AM is crying that "this was our idea first!".  SEC of course would love to add those two Brands to the league and hundreds of millions of dollars more.   If this happens, it will certainly effect more then the Big 12.  What does the Big Ten do?  Does the PAC 12 start games at 3:00AM Pacific time to get an advantage?

Is it time to make the Power 5 Conferences just one big league with divisions like the NFL? Fun Times.  I would like to suggest an Academic conference with the likes of Michigan, Vandy, Duke, Northwestern, Norte Dame, Stanford, and CAL.   If Stanford and CAL doesn't work due to being on the West Coast, then I submit Georgia Tech and Virginia.   :-)

• There is talk that DJ Wilson who is no longer on the Bucks and traded during the season, probably will get a Championship Ring.  That is one of the weirded things in sports, your not an NBA Champion but you have a Championship ring.   Those things are like $50K+ each, so I wouldn't turn it down.  

• Big Ten Media days start today and I'm sure Jimmy and the 3 players will say absolutely nothing while using words like.  "Working hard every day"  "Getting 1% better each day"  "This team could be special" "Last year was a disappointment but we have put it behind us"  "Freshman will certainly make an impact on this years team"   "We're excited about our new QB competition" "The new coaching staff has brought a lot of energy and are really bonding with the players"

Wolverine Wednesday: The SEC Won't Let Jimmy Be

A clear sign that Jimmy is making people nervous is when the SEC goes to the NCAA for rules to stop his ground breaking ideas.    Dennis Dodd from CBS Sports said he spoke to the SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, who is going to try to stop Michigan's IMG spring practice in Florida during spring break.   The reason you may find a bit funny:

“Our primary reaction [is] that, in the face of the time-demand conversations, we've got one program taking what has been 'free time' away,” Sankey said. “Let's draw a line and say, ‘That's not appropriate.'"

Greg believes that practice shouldn't be happening during Spring Break, which should be the students athlete's free time.  I believe many programs run Spring Practice during spring break.  You know what else is free time?  Christmas vacation, when everyone is preparing for Bowl Games or playoffs.     How would that work for basketball?   It doesn't.   Greg is grasping at straws. 

How many players would be able to afford to go to Florida for Spring Break on the Wolverines squad if there isn't any scheduled practices?   If you are a player and you get to practice in A2 or Florida, which option would you pick? To me this is a great benefit for the Michigan squad and Jimmy has mentioned they will have a little fun during the trip as well.  

Since that isn't the "real" reason, what is the concern?

Michigan traveling to Florida could also be perceived as another incursion on SEC recruiting territory. The SEC and ACC have sponsored pending legislation that would ban so-called offseason “satellite camps.” Harbaugh caused a stir when he took over at Michigan as he appeared at several of those camps deep in SEC recruiting territory.

“The net of that is to say the Southeastern Conference is not going to be outpaced in recruiting,” Sankey said. “If the national approach is that we want to have more aggressive summer camps and coaches touring around all summer, then we will not only engage in that behavior, we will certainly engage in that behavior more actively -- probably more effectively than others.”

• Jimmy is playing golf in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.   I can't imagine he spends to much time refining his short game.

• ESPN's Todd McShay is getting heat from ESPN for doing Jimmy's Signing Day Event.  ESPN is probably concerned they missed an opportunity by not covering the event.  I'm not buying that Todd can no longer be objective. 

Wolverine Wednesday: No Jokes - Just News Today

My grandfather who was born on April 1st used to say, "A fool was born on April Fools Day".   My father who loves to run pranks today, even sent me a hedgehog at work in Ann Arbor years ago.    I will save you the jokes and pranks today and just run with some football news - good and bad.   Hope you find a few minutes for a smile today and everyday! 

• The SEC coaches have an in league rule that won't allow their coaches to do camps outside 50 mile radius of their campus.  The Big Ten and NCAA doesn't have that rule.   James Franklin did a camp last summer in Georgia and now Jimmy and his band are heading for tour dates in 6 different locations, and one in Auburn's backyard in Prattville, Alabama.  "I think the SEC coaches last year made it clear that we'd like it to be that way throughout the country," Malzahn said. "That was a stance after our last spring meetings and I still feel the same."

• Saban is probably not too worried about Jimmy's tour dates as he has had 3 players arrested in in 4 days:  Suspended Crimson Tide running back Tyren Jones was arrested for possession of marijuana Tuesday in Tuscaloosa, joining dismissed defensive lineman Jonathan Taylor and sidelined safety Geno Smith on the last week's crime blotter.

• Scouts #1 basketball player in the nation, Jaylen Brown who seemly recruitment to Michigan continues to gain momentum, told ESPN that he will play at an Adidas school.   Which leaves Michigan, UCLA and Kansas.   Which could be good news for Michigan on the other had, I wish kids wouldn't choose a school on which shoe contract they have. 

• There continues to be concern over Drake Harris hamstrings.   He missed most of his senior year of high school and redshirted last year to make sure he was fully healed.   He was making noise as being 100% healthy early in the spring and then reports started to come out that he had tweaked the hamstring again.    The rumor mill is spinning that his hamstring might be more serious then a tweak and this could be a career effecting injury or condition.   Drake was a highly ranked basketball and football player in high school and had originally committed to MSU to play basketball for Izzo.   Let's hope the top tier medical staff at Michigan can figure this out and he can play ball again.

• Athlete Tony Butler and Pitt commit is visiting A2 on Thursday.

Michigan Monday: Looks for Examples

Here are a couple different but similar examples of where Michigan is and what other programs are doing:

• Auburn and Missouri combined for two SEC wins last year and now is in the Championship game.

• After a terrible year, Florida fired their OC yesterday and looks to be keeping head coach Will Muschamp.  They did not qualify for a bowl game.

• Texas A&M locked in Kevin Sumlin for another 6 years.

• USC reportedly is down to 3 candidates for their head coaching job.   Steve Sarkisian - Washington's head coach, James Franklin - Vandy's head coach and Boise State's Chris Peterson.  Sarkisian was on staff at USC under Pete Carroll and if you can win at Boise State or Vandy, you can coach.  I think Sarkisian is the favorite for the job.   There were many reports he was a candidate for the Michigan job before they hired Brady Hoke.  It's unknown if Brandon interviewed him or not.   I applaud USC AD Pat Haden for doing his research and making a decision in early December.   Michigan is also rumored to be playing Vandy in the Gator Bowl.

• Bo Pelini of Nebraska, who lost to Iowa on Friday went off in a press conference and it looks like Nebraska is going to stick with him.

Does Michigan's good offensive performance on Saturday save Big Al's job?

Probably, at least through the bowl game.  I don't see Brandon or Hoke firing him before January 1 and knowing how loyal Hoke is to his assistants, I think Big Al has probably bought another year in the role.   My question is, will Big Al be running an offense that can beat ND, MSU (again) and Ohio State on the road next year?  I doubt it.  


Setting the Table for OSU:

So OSU stops Michigan from a 2pt conversion and now faces MSU in the championship game.   A few hours later, Auburn returns a field goal with no time left on the clock to beat #1 Alabama.   Not to mention the #1 team in the land FSU could be without their best player and QB if he gets charged.    OSU is now #2 in the BCS but taking it on the chin for the terrible Big Ten.

A couple of thoughts, it will be interesting to see what the Big Ten does to the players who were involved in the fight on Saturday.   Will they have the guts to sit them for the Big Ten Championship game?

The OSU vs. MSU match-up will not be a walk over for Ohio State.   It will be OSU offense vs. MSU's defense.  If that is a "push" then MSU might have a slight edge with their improving offense vs. OSU defense.  I see a low scoring game that could go either way.


ESPN's Colin Coward:

Today, called Michigan awful and earlier this year that he thought Michigan was a year away from being a top 5 program.  He said he was very wrong and "they are not close", because Michigan is slow & thin on defense & can't control the edge, has inconsistent QB play and doesn't resemble anything close to a top 15 team.   He said Brady Hoke can recruit but they are not developing talent.

Wolverine Wednesday: Hey Coach, Need a Job?

NCAA Coaching searches are funny things.   We haven't heard anything about the coaching vacancies and who schools might be looking at for about a week.  Gruden's name always comes up and a few blogs run with the story he is seriously considering something and then it goes away.  

The first shoe to drop was a shocker to me in Bret Bielema leaving for Arkansas.   Let's be clear, Arkansas is not a better job then Wisconsin.   Then why would he leave?  Because of money.   I bet Bret felt that Wisconsin didn't respect him and kept his salary pretty low when the school was cashing big bowl and BTN checks every year.  He had to recruit against the likes of Michigan, ND and Ohio State and it wasn't going that well.  He took this job for money, plain and simple.  He thinks recruiting was hard at Wisconsin?  Now he has to recruit against the likes of Bama, LSU, Florida and Texas.  Good luck with that decision.  3-4 years tops in this role.  

Then the breaking news, Auburn hires their former Offensive Coordinator Big Al Borges to be their next head coach!   I can't believe it.

Purdue hires Darrel Hazel the former Kent State coach after Butch Jones turned them down for maybe the worst coaching situation in college football at Colorado.    I don't know if this is a good move or not.  I do know Darrell doesn't have the "big name" Purdue was looking for to turn around their program.

Tennessee is focusing their effort on Louisville's Charlie Strong and it looks like Charlie might stay at UL.  Which is probably a smart move with the Cardinals heading to the ACC, I'm not sure Tennessee is a better job at this point.

It seems Wisconsin wants their former OC Paul Chryst who just finished his first year as the headman at Pitt.   Paul as of know is staying at Pitt.

• Braylon Edwards got cut by the Seahawks yesterday.  Braylon needs to stay off twitter and catch a few more balls.

Michigan Monday: A Down Big Ten?

Coming into the year many expected a down year for the Big Ten with two brand names on NCAA probation with Penn State and Ohio State.   It was a safe bet to pencil in Wisconsin to the Big Ten Championship game in Indy.   Who was going to beat them in the Leaders division?  Illinois, Indiana or Purdue?  Not likely.  

Then Michigan preformed the way they did against Alabama in week 1 and then during Week 2 the sky fell on the rest of the Big Ten.  Here are the results from Saturday:

The Big Ten beat two MAC schools (yes UMass is in the MAC now), one service academy from the Mt. West, one team from the SEC, one team from Conference USA and one FCS school.

The losses were to 3 teams from the PAC 12, ND, Big 12 and the ACC.   Not good, not good at all.

-Wisconsin scored one touchdown against Oregon State who won 3 games last year.
- Iowa scored 6 points in a field goal battle with ISU.  (6-9 final)
- Illinois got blown out by ASU
- Nebraska and UCLA played a good game and UCLA is a program on the rise. 
- Penn State missed a field goal to beat Virgina with a few seconds left in the game.  Former Michigan verbal commit and former PSU 1st string kicker Anthony Fera transferred to Texas before the season started.

Seriously, why can't the Big Ten play on the West Coast?  If it's jet lag other teams better consider leaving a day earlier.

I think the most promising news for the Big Ten was the solid play by Purdue at ND.   That game was on during the Michigan game but it seemed Purdue played pretty well against ND.

The current AP rankings have MSU #10, OSU #12 and Michigan #17.  Wisconsin dropped out completely. 

How good is that Michigan State - ND game going to be this week in East Lansing?  The good news for Wolverines fans is someone has to lose this game.   It will also be a good scouting opportunity as Michigan plays ND in two weeks and MSU in 5 weeks.

• After scoring seven points last weekend, Wisconsin has fired their offensive line coach after two games.   The Badgers rushed 23 times for 35 yards against the Beavers.

Update:  Denard is the Offensive Big 10 player of the week and Devin Funchess is the Big 10 Freshman of the week. 

Funchess caught four passes for 106 yards, with a 30-yard TD reception, in Michigan's 31-25 win over Air Force on Saturday. He is the first U-M tight end with 100 or more yards receiving in a game since Jerame Tuman in 1997.

Robinson had 218 yards passing and 208 rushing against the Falcons. He is the only player in FBS history to run and pass for 200 or more yards in the same game three times.
