Michigan Monday: The Truth Behind the Ohio State Loss

We are all too close and too emotional when it comes to playing Ohio State.  Many times we can't see what is really happening because our heart over rides our head.   I fell victim to that when I wrote my Post Game before the game was even over.  I really didn't have time to process the entire game until I watched IU beat the Buckeyes on Saturday night.

I understand I'm not a fan of Wink's.  I've been pretty clear about that everyday since he was hired.  I've also given him credit when credit was due.  That win last season against the eventual National Champion with a Michigan team that didn't have a functioning QB, was sorcery.  I will also go on record that I thought Wink blitzed too much during the season and it cost his defense long drives and points.

Wink's lack of QB pressure against Ohio State cost Michigan the game.  What I watched on Saturday (mostly for the 1st half) was a carbon copy of OSU - Michigan.   The difference in the game ?  IU was pressuring Sayin.  Hell, IU was running plays that Michigan had run the week before.

Bob, IU is the #2 defense in the country, they must have more talent then Michigan?

Their roster is full of transfers from the MAC and small schools.  Its was not a talent issue.  It was a scheme and game plan issue.  Now, I get it.  Wink had to protect against the long ball with 2 NFL WR's on the outside.  But not pressuring Sayin at all, was a huge mistake.  It was the difference in IU winning the Big Ten Championship and Michigan booking a charter flight to Orlando.

Bob, Michigan's offense wasn't going to score too many more points against that OSU defense.

That is an accurate statement, but IU's high octane offense only scored 4 more points then Michigan did against that defense.  If Michigan had more possessions by pressuring the OSU QB, they could've scored more points.

Wink needs to go to the NFL next season.  Titans please hire him!

  • Sherrone made a quiet hire on Saturday when he hired former OSU DC Kerry Coombs as Special Teams Coordinator.  Kerry is from Cincinnati and has a ton of recruiting contacts in Ohio and in the midwest.  He also was in charge of Michigan for OSU recruiting, so he has a ton of ties instate as well.   Good hire and a guy that can coach a ton of position groups.
  • Anyone else laughing at what the OSU fans were thinking watching the Fox telecast on Saturday night with all the Michigan Basketball promotions? 😀
  • Speaking of Michigan Basketball, wow!
  • I missed KG's daughter signed with Michigan Volleyball.  Did you know that KG would've gone to Michigan if he didn't go straight to the NBA out of highschool!
  • Blake Corum had his best day as a pro: 128 on 12 carries and 2 TD's!
  • JJ also played better and threw 3 TD's
  • Sherrone confirmed Hausmann has a personal issue and dealing with a thumb injury.  His status for the Bowl Game is TBD.
  • ND that is a shame.  No Pop Tart?

Lots to say: I hate Notre Dame {like no other}. But anyone that thinks they did not get screwed is brain dead! Bob what is the deal with a "Pop tart"? Please explain ...... Alabama waltzes in there with 3 losses .... WTF?
Tulane and James Madison who beat my high school football team made it. People are blinded by 12-0 records and not strength of schedule. Case in point (stars can be meaningless), but we still count how many 5 stars we get each year. Have you know that the IU quarterback was raided a 2 STAR AND NOW WILL GET Heisman? does THAT SINK IN?
Where is my synopsis of Moore we were promised ... shelved?
Unless you are the "kookman" expand play-offs to 16 teams. are consider strength of schedule over 12-0's please.
Here's food for thought we play a lot of filler games like everyone else. Make the season 10 games ... last two games starts play-offs with 64 teams like basketball at the end of 12 game season you have 16 left for play-offs. Is anything wrong with that or would you like to play Akron Zips for a opener?
I like Cowman's comment's, I believe he said saying we are a young team does not get it anymore. Look at IU, kicking "behind after getting playas from small schools like Pittsburgh in the 70's drafts. Anyone totally disagreeing with my comment, can give themselves a "self-administered swirly!

That is Chowman not cowman, try to type accurately but nearly impossible to correct all mistakes.

to rate teams ..... divide win/loss record by strength of schedule ranking (1 to 132). Quit playing candy-ass games. Or put my old decrepit self on the field.

It was rather enjoyable watching the $uckeyes choke another B10 championship away. Cryan Ryan spoke about "winning with humility" against us but he failed. They lose with humility even worse. I suspect one state had the sads Saturday night but 49 others were gleeful at the result. BTW....I'm sure IN had their signs.

Bob, Michigan had no chance against Ohio St because Sherrone's offense couldn't move the ball, yet alone score. If you take away Jairre Hill's interception on the 5 yrd line last year, Sherrone's offense has scored ZERO touchdowns against Ohio St the last 2 years. Wink has his problems, but blaming him makes no sense.

Michigan has way more talent than Indiana. Its all coaching.

I think Sherrone's low salary is keeping him around. Maybe im wrong, but with NIL money needed for players and paying the huge fine for 'Sign Gate', maybe Warde is trying to save a few bucks. Based on performance and wasting talent, he should probably be gone.

I don't think it's Sheronne's low salary, it's Warde's guy and Warde is an AssClown. He should never have been hired, but here we are again living the Hoke and RR years. If he doesn't make the playoffs next year he should be gone. But we will have more excuses from idiot fans that have no clue and are ok with being average or below average.

Sir Blue Monkey said...

Bob, why do you think this ST coach is a good hire, just based on recruiting as you mentioned? I am just curious as it sounds like he's been fired at his last two stops because he's horrible. But, Sheronne knows and we will win the NC next year because of this hire and his great coaching.

We don't beat ohio state, but could've been a better showing, but that's coaching and we don't have it. Underwood rolled out zero times, but there's a lot of reasons and watching our coach on the sideline sit there as the deer in headlights he is.

I saw Kirby Smart run over to a Georgia defensive back that committed a bone head play in the SEC Championship game and just ream him a new one. I then thought, I've never seen Sherrone do that. He really is a dear in headlights.

Kerry Combs is an ancient fossil. Just another re-tread.

Mastermind said...

Im gonna say something out of the box, but its better than Kerry Combs. I would've contacted Jay Harbaugh and offered him assistant head coach. Young up and comer with all of Jimmy's, John's, and Jack's connections.

Sir Blue Monkey said...

Yes, you and I and anyone that had onions would've done that. We are talking about Sheronne and Warde along with the Michigan president and regents; they are all soft clowns. Again, he seems like a really nice person, but doesn't make him a head coach especially at a big program. It's frustrating as fans because I hear people saying just lose so they can fire him. What a shame as that's where we are at now.

In John U Bacon's book Overtime, he quoted someone as saying "Michigan fans aren't happy unless their unhappy". Lots of happiness here. Hahahahaha...

Sir Blue Monkey said...

You could probably say that about all the top programs. Michigan is a top program with the largest stadium in the country, alumni, etc. If you are happy with being a joke like when Hoke, RR and now Sheronne then it's ok. How about a team that is well coached and battles in every game, win or lose. We see none of that and that's stating facts so yes, if that makes me "unhappy" with the state of Michigan football then you got me. I see too many fans making excuses and that is weak. Bo may not have won bowl games and he admitted he got conservative and lost some games, but his teams played and battled even all of the cheating teams he played. After half time you saw adjustments and people like msg & osu losers saying his record was as great, blah, blah, but he was one of the best coaches ever.

As someone once said... "You hire clowns...you end up with a circus"

Mastermind said...

Thom- That's a good one! Lol

Mastermind said...

Sir Blue Monkey- I feel your pain brother. I think you watch Michigan the same way I do lately. I want the team and players to succeed 100%, but I know in my heart that Sherrone is preventing this team from winning.

ND got screwed and deserved it. Join a damn conference. so sick of their "we want to be independent" no one toe in and one toe out. ND got screwed because the SEC and ACC is pretty much property of ESPN. B1G belongs to Fox, and ND is the cheese that stands alone with NBC....so yeah they were always going to get screwed. Plus I love it cause my ex-inlaws are golden domers....salty tears.....Ha ha ha. Plus don't lose to the 2 teams on your schedule with a pulse. CFP is all BS anyway. Its not a playoff, its an invitational.

Welcome to age of NIL...IU wanted it more, where OSuckU were more interested in if their checks still cashed.

in the 3 loses, Wink didn't have any answers on defense. Against OU his D couldn't even tackle. Against USC it was tecno bowl and Lincoln Riley just kept running the same 3 plays. I tapped out after half time of the OSU game. there was no pass rush and the offense was again morbid. my biggest angst with Wink is not that he blitzes too much its how he blitzes. pretty much shows the LBs coming up to blitz and then brings the LBs. there's no eye candy. no showing something pre-snap and then bring a zone blitz post snap, ala Minter/McDonald. A well coached offense, knowing where the blitz is coming from, will beat it most of the time

Chowman said...

and the Tulane/JMU thing...its a result of too many teams in the playoffs, i.e. greed. I'd argue Bama shouldn't be in. Fine you want ND over JMU or Tulane? cool, instead of 54-3, it'll be 31-10. I'll play "get off my lawn you rotten kids" guy....but the 4 game playoff was where it was at.

Chowman said...

Quoting John U Pigfat......noted UofM slappy and propagandist! Hell, why don't you quote Bob Wojnowski while you're at it. John U. Bacon: "everything is awesome"

szanreno said...

I simply posted a quote and source and cowman bitched about it. How miserable is that?

szanreno said...

And it wasn't Bacon who said it, he quoted someone who said
it. Read my post again and try and keep up...
