Citrus Bowl Post Game: Tic-Tac-Done

The real Wink Martindale's most popular game show Tic-Tac-Dough ended in 1985.  The fake Wink Martindale's Michigan career ended on 12/31/2025 in a Orlando Camping Stadium.

As you know, I hated this hire from day 1 as Wink was known as unhirable in the NFL.  For goodness sakes, even John Harbaugh fired him.  What the hell was Sherrone doing?  I guess that question was asked a ton of times in Schembechler Hall the last two years.

Wink not wearing any Michigan gear on the sideline yesterday is a sign of pure disrespect from a disrespectful person.  He is going to get paid $2.7M next year from U of M and if I were the AD, I would try to find a way to fire him for cause after that.  He also failed at his job, when Michigan needed him the most this season.

Case in point, Ohio State got beat by two teams after the Michigan game.  Why?  Because they were able to pressure the QB.  Wink who over blized all year didn't get any QB pressure against Sayin or Arch.  Both picked apart the Michigan secondary.   Wink had a month to do 2 things.  1 - pressure Arch and 2 stop him from running.  His defense did neither.   That was a "Cancun" game strategy if I ever saw one.  Good Riddance!

Now onto the actual game. The thing that is great about College Football is every game carries some type of stakes.  Except a bowl game and that was evident in Orlando in what should've been called the Back-up Bowl.  Michigan played hard and the game was competitive for about 95% of the afternoon.   When the playoffs expand, I don't believe the bowl system will survive.  I've rarely been to a Michigan game outside a spring game that wasn't sold out.   There were 47,000 fans there on Wednesday in a stadium that holds over 65,000.

Cheers:
  • Outside a few bad throws I thought Bryce played well
  • Happy for Kendrick Bell's 1st TD catch
  • Marsh is elite and it will be a full court press to keep him in Ann Arbor
  • Outside the punting game, I thought Coombs improved the specials teams in a few weeks
  • I really like Sullivan, I think he is future star at LB
  • I was lucky enough to sit in the Michigan family section and the consensus seems that many of the players family like Coach Whitt.  (from the families I spoke to)
  • The players showed heart in what was a terrible December for them.
  • Happy Morgan played well
  • Today starts a new chapter in Michigan Football.
Jeers:
  • Wink
  • Some of the play calling on both sides of the ball was a bit questionable
  • McCulley had a couple of bad plays.  That illegal block was costly
  • The Refs took over the game in the 2nd half.
  • Too many drops
  • Damn Z, you had to miss another kick in your last game
  • Too many back-ups on both teams
  • The Cheez it folks clearly want to be the Pop Tarts folks
There is a song by the Counting Crows called "Long December".  The first verse goes like this:

A long December and there's reason to believeMaybe this year will be better than the lastI can't remember the last thing that you said as you were leavingNow the days go by so fast

Michigan's long December is over and it's time to focus on the future of this program!

i lost respect for you by saying overall Underwood had a good game. Underwood has lost all his mechanics and form. He wants to be like Mahomes and throw side arm except he is not Mahomes. and every throw is off his back foot. Tom Brady had to be going nuts. i dont know if he can be corrected. Kyle needs to bring in a qb with him.

“Lost respect”? Relax - it’s just an opinion. You don’t have to agree, but it doesn’t have anything to do with Bob as a person.

Like, I disagree with your take that Whitt needs to bring in a new QB. But my level of respect for you is unchanged…

This game is exactly why I don’t like bowl games. It didn’t lead to reps that improved the team or the players, in my view. Wonder if fans of the bowl games from yesterday have a change of heart?

No, still like them all... So do the players from what I've observed..

Respect.

I'm not as bullish on Bryce as Bob is. his footwork is terrible and so is his decision making. to be fair to him, he's not been coached at Michigan, so hopefully Whitt can change that by hiring a top flight QB coach.

Y'all know I am in Bob's corner on Wink. He mailed in that game plan and I don't know what his hat said, but it wasn't a block M hat and that just solidifies that Wink is about Wink, first and foremost.

I align with Bob on Coombs too. I thought the ST looked 1000% better and Whitt needs to find a punter.

his footwork is poor, often throwing off the back foot. its why many of his passes sail and float. in Bob's defense, he did look better from the aspect of they cut him loose and reinforces what I heard all season. that there was a disconnect between Lindsay and Moore. The former wanting to use BU's legs more, getting him on the edge and allowing him to have the option to run or pass. The later wanted to run the same stale offense that they ran under Jim. A static pocket passing game.

I will say Underwood did regress this year and yesterday he looked like a true freshman. His mechanics seem weird to me in terms of his release, and yes, he's always throwing off his back foot. Many are saying that Michigan needs to suck up to him, but leave if someone is paying you more. Wittingham is not going to sell his soul for a kid and they are all getting paid. All the QB's up for heisman were portal kids. Either way, we do need depth at QB whether BU stays or not. I really don't care if he leaves and I still think he could end up really good, but a little humility would do him some good; "no ones seen a freshman like me". Well, yes we have.

From a entertainment standpoint the game wasn't much. I said it yesterday my 3 takes:
Bryce needs coaching, a lot of coaching
Goodbye Wink, you won't be missed in AA
Keep the ST coach...he and the RBs coach are the only guys from Moore's staff I'm keeping

Even if it's a new coaching staff, the bowl games are good for the practices and younger players. Also it's getting the kids together and bonding as much as possible. These are all scrimmages and I think Notre Dame are a bunch of clowns for opting out.

It's going to be a good year as we ring in the new year with Ohio State losing, but of course we need some beautiful excuses like the sun was in their eyes, the turf was wetter on their sideline, Miami turned off their sideline heaters. There are many more and I could go on for hours, poor OSU....

Bob, in terms of Wink, yes it's time to move on. I do give him credit for the OSU game last year, but we had 2 amazing DL. Your dislike should be on Sheronne and more so on Warde as this was/is all on Warde. Warde should be fired and not sure what they are waiting for, but good ol' UofM is soft and probably don't want to hurt his feelings.

Goblu said...

How can a true freshman regress? It’s his first year?!

Goblu said...

I agree with Monkey. If the fans are to be played, as I said, should be underclassmen who need experience and seniors who want to play. No starters please.

Sir Blue Monkey said...

I'm sorry Goblu, I didn't know that you did not watch any games this year (just messing). He started and played a full season, so yes, he regressed. Does that mean he doesn't win the heisman next year, no and he could eventually be a #1 draft pick. It's all coaching and he looked worse as the season went on, but again I blame the clown Sheronne and our coaches.

Goblu said...

So you think he played really well early? Stats and eyeball test don’t say that to me. He played the same all year.

szanreno said...

I think his hat said "Have a Day"?!?

Chowman said...

SBM and why many say NIL is better spent on college players than kids right out of HS. with college players you've seen what they've done at this level. for every Trevor Lawrence, there are multiple Spencer Rattlers.

Sir Blue Monkey said...

I think Wittingham had a hat on too and it said' "I said good day sir!"

Chowman said...

SBM if they stay. there's no guarantees anymore. The days of these kids staying and waiting for their chance to play are over. its all about immediate gratification. play me or I'm out!

Chowman said...

SBM: I didn't see Whitt in a hat, and I can't blame him. The man has some serious lettuce for a 66 year old. Yeah, I wish I had his lettuce

Chowman said...

I too am pleased with the OSU loss, but I won't let that be my determination of a good or bad year! If we get to a point that the highlight of our season is OSU losing then we've sunk to Sparty level, where they root more for a UofM loss than a Spartard win.

Voice of Reason said...

A team that has so many flags called on them is a sign of an undisciplined team. With that being said, I am personally convinced that some of these rules aren't needed and should be purged. It's tough for the officials to be consistent without stopping the game every other play over ticky-tack fouls while some players get called and others do not. There gets to a point where we should just let the players play. IMHO!!!

Sir Blue Monkey said...

How about them not reviewing the targeting on Klein? They reviewed the 3rd down spot, but not a player getting targeted and knocked out of the game with a concussion. Even the camera crew was garbage using the sky cam for kickoffs and not showing replays.

Sir Blue Monkey said...

Chowman, please know that I want Michigan to win, but I did enjoy Miami winning and I can't stand Miami so yes, it's just a nice way to start the new year as we have new coaches and what will make it even better is Warde being fired.

Per CBS Sports, Whittingham has officially hired Jason Beck as offensive coordinator. Beck was called an offensive genius in the article and averaged 41 pts a game last year. Thank you Jesus!

Can't believe Bryce didnt have a QB coach under Sherrone. Smh Aside from throwing off his back foot, he's got the physical ability, but needs to improve his mental game. Some Tom Brady one on one sessions sure would be nice.

Mastermind said...

You need to let Bryce take his lumps. This should have happened early in the season, but Sherrone was afraid turn him loose. There is a saying, 'A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor' that applies here.

Mastermind said...

Sir Blue- It didnt help any that we basically didn't have a head coach that could've yelled in the referee's ear over that missed call.

Mastermind said...

Sad chapter is officially over. That was right up there with the Rich Rod era. Thank you Sherrone for thinking with your *#@! and not your brain. I couldn't stand another season like this next year.

Mastermind said...

And that catch by Bell was something sweet! Who said we dont have any talent at WR? Hard to tell unless you actually throw people the ball. Hopefully Beck, the new O.C., will utilize guys better.
