Michigan Thursday Continued: Michigan Head Coaching Candidates

Michigan again finds itself in a head coaching search at the wrong time.  Last time it was months late, this time its weeks late.  Which is better but not great.   This time there is not an option on the current coaching staff.

On the other hand, I'm not sure many of those guys would've been on Michigan's radar anyway.  The thing you have to consider is:

#1 - Is the coach hirable?

#2 - Do they want to coach at Michigan?

#3 - You can only trust a few people on this.  Everybody is going to have an opinion.  The ones that throw out names like Urban Meyer and Brian Kelly have no idea what they are talking about.

My list:

#1 - Jesse Minter - Look at the success Mike MacDonald has had at Seattle.  Jesse will be inline for an NFL head coaching job very soon, with his success in LA.   He is a wizard on defense and could let Chip call plays on the offensive side.   A great recruiter and what I consider the best fit.  Not ever being a head coach is a concern, but like I reported earlier today, his dad was the head coach at ND and could help him navigate the waters.   Hire him before the Giants do!  (he also might have an NCAA show cause)

#2 - John Harbaugh - John is a perfect fit and his time in Baltimore might be coming to an end.  I think he is a better coach then his brother but will have NFL options if he leaves Baltimore and is not really hireable until the end of the season anyways.   The timeline really doesn't work but I would love to have him.

#3- Kalen DeBoer - The rumor is he wants the job.  The Alabama fans do not like him because he is not Saban.  He would be a good option as he turned UW into a real football program but has had limited success at Bama.  He is in the playoffs and not really hirable at the moment, even though Georgia took him to the woodshed last weekend.

#4 - Kenny Dillingham - Young coach with a huge upside. Down side is this would be a huge job for him with just head coaching experience at ASU.  I love the ceiling but he could be another crash and burn young guy.

#5 -  Jedd Fisch - Turned around Arizona but has struggled at UW.  I liked him better as a candidate after Arizona but he would bring head coaching experience and a ton of coaching experience in total.  Good Shit Jedd could easily be a t-shirt.

#6 - Brent Key - He went to Tech so it might be a tough pull but the guy has won a lot of football games at an academic institution.  I wouldn't be excited about it but I wouldn't hate it either.

Stop talking about these guys:  Meyer, Kelly, Miles and Gruden.  I also don't see Louisville's Jeff Brohm being a fit but could be in consideration.  Unbelievable bad timing for Matt Campbell.

Michigan's Regents need to figure out very fast what they want to do with Warde as the AD has to hire the new coach very quickly.

Michigan has to re-secure their recruiting class and the portal opens in early January.   They need to add depth and keep their current roster from jumping.

Did I mentioned they have a silly exhibition on New Years Eve as well?

Conclusion:

If you want to hire a coach today, its Jedd.   If you are willing to wait a few weeks, DeBoer is an option.  The high ceiling guys like Minter and Dillingham might be too risky coming off the issues the programs has had the last few years.

Bob, I love your list especially at the top! Minter is making around $2 million and yes, he may want to only be in the pros (which I get) but money talks. He would have to at least listen to an offer and some of these coaches are making around $10 million so offer that up and see what he says. I would love John Harbaugh as well; come win a NC and you will have both where your brother only has a NC. I don't trust Warde at all, but will he be fired too?

I think Minter might be inline for an NFL HC job ala Mike McDonald. Does John Harbaugh really want to coach in college? I think that's a pipe dream. I like the DeBoer angle. He's done wonders with Michael Pennix and now Ty Simpson and Bama fans don't like him because he isn't Nick Saban. He's their RichRod. I like Fisch over Dillingham, but both are QB developers as well. I don't know as much about Key other than he's coaching at his alma mater so he probably is a tough pull.

I agree with Bob. You want a new coach tomorrow, go hard in on Jedd Fisch. Otherwise, wait till Bama gets bounced in the first round of the CFP as they don't belong and then make a run at DeBoer.

Chowman said...

back to DeBoer, he also has midwest ties and was never a good fit at Bama.

Rumor mill saying Brian Kelly spotted a willow run. 😬

Sir Blue Monkey said...

It's funny how Alabama wants him out as I believe he has the same record record as Saban did his first two years at Alabama. It's also different now as all schools are paying so little Nicky didn't have his thiefdom.

Seems impossible minter or John given nfl schedule.

Chowman said...

Minter has a show cause. HE CAN'T COACH IN COLLEGE

Chowman said...

what's the source? if they hire that bum...I'm done

Dont rush into a hire (again!) Interview all the coaches interested, even it pushes the hiring into mid January. I could give a shit about the stupid bowl game. I dont see this as bad timing. We're only 1.5 week past the end of the season. If we fired Sherrone earlier we lose half the recruiting class. (Heard Ludwig is out). Honestly, id rather lose half the class then bring Sherrone back for another year of frustration. Lets get this hire right and we are back on track.

Mastermind said...

Anyone we hire is better than Sherrone, so this is my early Christmas present.

Mastermind said...

Bob, why would you want Chip Lindsey back? The offense looked like a '73 Ford Pinto doing 45 mph on I-75 while everyone else is doing 80.

Mastermind said...

Not endorsing this, but Kelly is still better than Sherrone.

Chowman said...

I believe the TP opens on January 2nd. you can't afford to slow roll this too long. If what's coming out of Tuskaloosa is true, go get him.

Also, Warde might be on his way out. Guess he fired Sherrone on his own without an HR rep, with Moore showing signs of being mentally distressed. Looks like the University might be setting Warde for a fall just like Moore. Not sure how credible it is, but there's also talk that Manual knew as early as this summer that Moore was boffing his executive assistant.

Mastermind said...

The Valenti and Rico clown show is in full hate mode today. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Chowman said...

so I heard thru 3rd parties, that there was disagreement between Chip and Sherrone on what the offense should look like. Lindsey wanted to open things up and use BUs legs more and roll him out, giving him pass/run option. Where Moore wanted to keep the same run heavy, play action offense that Jim ran.

Mastermind said...

Chowman I wash my hands with Warde. I used to give him the benefit of the doubt because he was put in some no win situations. But there is too much shit happening that makes you wonder what the culture is like, and who are the adults inside Schembechler Hall. Im ambivalent now to Warde. He actually made good hires for hockey, women's basketball, and mens basketball. My fear is the interim president makes the football coaching hire. Wouldn't want that.

https://people.com/sherrone-moore-911-dispatcher-reveals-stalker-call-same-location-11867162

this gets ickier as it goes on. and the narrative isn't lining up. the call was placed at 4:14, but the announcement he was terminated at 4:45. was he fired before or after the 911 call? and there's news coming out, that Moore was acting strangely for weeks and he showing signs of mental instability. on top of that, the NY Post is reporting he was DMing OnlyFans models and following models on Instagram.

Mastermind said...

Chowman I kept telling people that this offense looked nothing like what Chip ran at N.C., and Sherrone had to be interfering. Could never get that confirmed or denied.

Chowman said...

eh, they're stretching it a bit. I personally never bought into the leaders and the best and integrity bullshit. my opinion is if you aren't cheating, you're not trying to win. you push the envelope to get an advantage, some times you go too far and then there are rules and if not, they'll make new rules

Mastermind said...

Here's how I keep my sanity. I keep things to just football and avoid all the personal drama. This goes for actors and musicians. Elvis, Kurt Cobain, Hendrix, etc., great artists but Fd up personal lives.

Mastermind said...

Every winning program is doing SOMETHING. Spygate and now Sherrone is nothing compared to what SEC schools have been doing for the last 50 years. Even Pat Caputo said State was paying their players when he was there 30 years ago.

I heard Warde knew of this for a while, too, but this is like court, you have to be able to prove shit. New evidence just came to light and he was fired with cause. Cause is important.

Chowman said...

now supposedly, the alleged victim (and I use that loosely as it takes 2 to tango) got a 55% raise in salary without changing job titles. how the EFF does that happen without sending off alarm bells?

Chowman said...

There's no way Warde survives this. this all happened on his watch

Mastermind said...

DeBoerd is my number one choice

Chowman said...

this whole thing screams of a guy that wasn't ready to hold the position he was given. its like given a new driver a Hellcat for their first car......Moore wasn't mature enough to be the HC at Michigan

Mastermind said...

Idk about that. How would the public know someone's salary? Plus HR needs to approve all kinds of red tape bullshit. Idk man.

Mastermind said...

Gave him enough rope to hang himself.

And I hope he is ok. Hes an emotional dude.

UM plane spotted in Baton Rouge picking up the Kiffin family. Of course that's a joke. This is an unwanted opportunity. This is a chance to clean house and refocus the UM culture. Warde should do an honorable thing and resign. He's garbage and their's garbage happpening under his nose.

Mastermind said...

Warde made good hires in Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, and Men's Basketball. My fear is if Warde goes, then the current interim president will make the football coach hire.

Not a chance in Hell with Kiffin

Sir Blue Monkey said...

Or just fire him now. Yes, they need to clean house and move on.

Kelly is another AssClown and an embarrassment; besides his fake accent, remember his dancing and grinding on a recruit during a visit? WTF?!

I’d have Dusty talk to PJ Fleck. I see a lot of similar personality traits. PJ was a winner at WMU, has strong Michigan and Midwest ties and has done about as much as can be done at Minnesota. He’s been there a number of years and has represented the Gophers admirably. And I don’t think he has any desire to jump to the pros. Well spoken and high integrity guy, which is what Michigan desperately needs right now!

Alablue said...

Problem with Minter, every year we will have to endure the Minter to the NFL. I hated that with Harbaugh. We need stability. John Harbaugh would be his last stop, unless he buys someone a hamburger.

Voice of Reason said...

Bob nice commentary as usual. My thoughts are that Michigan needs to hire the preverbal "Homerun" hire, in other words they need a can't miss guy that can 1) grab the attention of the players, recruits and staff and has the respect of the college football community, 2) know the college landscape and has demonstrated success in it, 3) is not so old that they will retire in five years and we're going to go through this again after that, or so young that after a year or two of success at Michigan they will bolt to the NFL if they call because of career aspirations. 4) Can via experience take this program up at least to the CFP level which means being a top notch recruiter and can handle the donors, regents, players, families and high school programs, i.e., have a personality and brains [challenging and beating osu, and playing for the B1G championship at least every other year], and 5) can love the program, school and embrace the traditions that make Michigan...Michigan. We don't need another RR. In other words, we need a sure thing because a mistaken hire could set us back several more years.

So, with that being said, how would these filters affect your list or anyone else's list? Things that make you go hhmm! IMHO!!!

ScottyDoggs said...

I was going to comment but "voice of reason" already said it, but more eloquently and precisely. I pray to my "plastic Jesus" on my 57 Chevy that the hire is spot on. No more Hokes! Only it cannot be drawn out past New Years. We need the portal. Right Chowman?

It expires in December

For all the minter talk, his show cause does end on the 25th.

“ Minter sent 18 impermissible text messages to a prospect before the conclusion of his sophomore year in high school, which amounted to a one-year show-cause order that runs from Dec. 16, 2024 through Dec. 25, 2025”

And what has Fleck done at Minnesota? NOTHING. if Michigan can't do better than PJ Fleck, then what's the point.

Victor in AA said...

Baloney, Last I looked Sherrone was a full-grown man with three kids and a family. A generation ago, eighteen-year-olds were sent into life/death situations- what changed? This isn't about the football aspect, it is the responsible human being aspect- Moore has brought shame on all those around him including my alma mater and he gets NO pass. And Warde needs to go too.

Chowman said...

you really think Minter will come back? when his name is being mentioned as a possible NFL HC candidate? and like someone else says, how long would he be at Michigan before he's drawn back to the NFL? Why deal with NIL and TP when you can just be in the NFL and have to deal with professional egos? at least in the NFL they have contracts, so you don't have to worry every year about your own players leaving
