How the Game Works: Agents talk to schools with openings behind the scenes to get their guys raises at the schools they are currently at. AD's not skilled at negotiation fall for it like a kid hearing the ice cream truck in their neighborhood.
Coach Speak: "I've never talked to anyone from School X and I'm very happy and dedicated to our school." Which means the Agent has talked to School X and the process is working. Or I have a team in the playoff in 4 days and I need to be locked down on things here. If they wanted the School X job they sure as hell not going to state it in social media or at a press conference before a playoff game. Don't forget this famous line by Dolphins Head Football coach Nick Saban: "I'm not going to Alabama!"
What Now? I will go back to my earlier posts. Who is hire-able at the moment? DeBoer is not with a playoff game on Friday. Jesse Minter is not, pretty much any NFL guy is not. Sure, Biff can keep the ship afloat while Jesse makes a playoff run, but that is a long time. Also, I think the Regents want a coach with head coaching experience. Kenny Dillingham is hireable as ASU just has a bowl game but it sounds like Warde got played or didn't come strong enough with the offer. Jedd Fisch just won his bowl game and continues to be the likeliest candidate.
A Jedd Fisch hire isn't exciting as he really hasn't done anything of note at UW. The Arizona turnaround was nice but Jedd just doesn't stir emotions of excitement for most Michigan fans. What I really like about Jedd is he might bring his DC Ryan Walters with him who I consider to be one of the best DC's in college football. He might get the UW job if Jedd leaves but his run at Purdue was not very good. My son hates Jedd as the pick and thinks that hire would be a disaster. Every time he reads a search update, he texts me, We are F'ed.
We were F'ed as soon as Harbaugh left for the Chargers. It's really hard to find a good/great football coach. Don't for a minute think the Alabama fans love DeBoer, in fact if OK beats them by 21, they might pay for his flight to Ann Arbor. You don't want to be the guy that replaces Saban at Alabama. Its a no win situation.
The Warde Problem: There is nothing worse then a leader who thinks they are one of the best in the country, when actually they are terrible at their job. David Brandon clearly falls into this category and so does Warde. These guys can't believe there is or was any narrative of them failing at their job. I have no idea how Warde still has his job. Yes, the Dusty hire was really good, but the long list of failures should out weigh any success he has had. Also does anyone have any confidence at all that Warde can negotiate with Jimmy Sexton? No, chance.
Reports now are that Sherrone was having these "extracurricular activities" even when he was the OC and it was not a secret in the athletic department. Warde went ahead and made him the head coach anyways. Where is the Due Diligence? It sort of reminds me of the situation with former Michigan LB coach Chris Partridge. He was fired on false allegations. None of this shows any consistency from Warde on his hiring/firing practices and shows a complete lack of leadership.
- Michigan Basketball continues to impress me. They were on the road in a hostile environment against a guard that couldn't miss, who put up 20 in the first half. They found themselves down by 9 in the 2nd half, but they stayed the course. Got Maryland frustrated and beat them by playing sound basketball and won by 18 points. It was maybe one of the more impressive wins they have had this season. One thing is for sure, anytime Michigan goes on the road this year they are going to get that teams best effort, no matter their record.

You forgot the part where Coach John Beilein went to Fla to convince coach May to come to the UM. Beilein should be the new AD
I wouldn't put too much stock into the DeBoer chatter till after Bama gets eliminated from the CFP, which could be this week. Negotiations take place between the school and the agent, not the coach. Also, what is Kalen going to say "yeah, can't wait to move to Ann Arbor, unfortunately I HAVE to coach this damn Bama team in the CFP. There only one Lane Kiffin. The rest of college football isn't wired the way Lane is. It's why every team that hires Lane Kiffin gets what they deserve. Dude is all about Lane Kiffin.
Yes, getting Dusty was due to Beilein as Warde is an AssClown. Being an AssClown actually is not easy, but Warde makes it look like everyone could do it.
Since we don't have a president in place, I am wondering if they are keeping Warde to possibly hire a new coach then fire him? I know the portal is coming up, but you can't make a panic hire and then we are stuck with another clown as coach for at least 3 years. I still like Minter and money talks, but I am not in charge even though I try to be an AssClown which my wife would tell you I nailed it.
SBM - Minter is more of a pipe dream than DeBoer. First he's already being talked about as an NFL HC candidate, if not this cycle, possibly next cycle. 2nd, because he has no real ties to Michigan, other than being on Harbaugh's staff, he wouldn't be a long-term solution.
Thanks Chowman as now I'm even more sad and depressed over this whole garbage. Maybe if I could just slap Warde a few times it would make me feel better (not a punch, just a couple slaps). Is that too much to ask?
What is with all the hype over Kenny Dillingham? The guy is 22-16 in his brief head coaching career. He is 35 years old with 2 years of head coaching experience coming into this season. Sound like someone we know? I'd call him Sherrone 2.0. Hard pass.
Do these search teams understand football, or are they executive pin heads that never played the game? Makes me worry.
SBM - like you I just want a Bonafide coach for Michigan. Look I thought of the two coordinators under Jim, Minter was the best, but he had to leave Michigan cause the NCAA gave him a show cause penalty and he had to go the NFL where he's been really good as Jim's DC. Too me its either DeBoer, Dillingham, or Fisch....I'd be good with Drinkwitz or Lea, but the latter have no midwest ties let alone Michigan ties so that be a stretch. If we end up with some retread like Brian Kelly or another Brady Hoke....I'm done....greed has ruined all sports and I'm not too far from tapping out anyway.
Im sure Warde had a list of candidates, I know I did. Things take time. Now we have recruits decommitting. Thats to be expected. We can't rush this and have another bad coach for the next few years. We need a man's coach, like Dan Campbell, that can re-set the tone. Someone to stand up for what's right, and to Warde if necessary. We need a warrior, like Bo. Don't need a buddy coach cheerleader like Sherrone, or a little bitch boy like Kenny freakin Dillingham.
I hope we've talked to all the big names and offered them substantial pay raises. Make them say no. Then there are the plan B guys. Kyle Wittigham at Utah. Jed Fish, P.J. Fleck. Drinkiwitz seems soft, IMHO. Then we get into the coordinator category which scares me, because being a coordinator is different then leading a team. Case and point, Sherrone was a coordinator.
Jonathan Smith at Michigan State was a nice guy, Very low key, polite. Thats not what we want. Need the kind of guy thats a molder of men that has enough experience and connections to assemble a great staff. These guys coming from a conference like the Big12 dont impress me. The competition is mid level B1G at best. I pray Larry Ellison is involved in this hiring. $$$
Ok, I've spoken my two cents. Time to kick back and watch this circus unfold. God speed.
When I hear all of this coach speak what immediately comes to mind is that song by Kenny Rogers, The Gambler. "You gotta know when to holdem, know when to foldem., know when to walk away, know when to run..." and that's what these coaches are doing. The problem that they face is, if they put themselves out there and they don't get the job, then they are screwed going back to their own fan base. We probably won't hear anything from the coaches until ink is on paper. Moreover, if worse comes to worse and they continue to hold their cards close to their vest, then they'll get a hefty pay raise by their current school.
Regarding Jeff Fisch, he doesn't light up my Christmas tree very much, but I do appreciate the fact that he has close to a genius offensive mind. Also, that there's no known scandals around him (no apparent zipper problem). He seems like a very nice and quiet guy, maybe someone that you'd introduce to your sister. Which is not the personality of someone that you'd want to lead men into battle. I'm looking for a General Patton type who knows how to battle; and Jedd has never played football himself...AT ALL! Now I'm saying this knowing that it's a possibility that he MIGHT be the best head coach that Michigan has ever had since Fielding H. Yost, but to me, he seems like the girl that you'd date but hesitate to get married to. IMHO!!!
VOR- Well put! Lol
Yes, but is he a sick pervert?
Agree; NO panic hires. If it takes time to find the right guy then so be it. With college sports being garbage you can build a team overnight with NIL and the portal.
Seems like two camps are forming .... folks that want to patient and let Poggi lead the team for one year. and there are those (including me) that want great coach (ASAP). But don't just fill the position with a Hoke (I mean Joke). If you strike out finding one, Yes wait.... but try the dickens to get one. Spend the almighty dollar. That's what is all about now isn't it? If you just have Poggi, you might strike out in the portal .... (which to my opinion is better than recruiting (no guessing, or as much) The portal guy's come seasoned (with salt and peppa!! (LOL))
College sports are ruined and that's all on the NCAA as they are trash and could've put something in place a long time ago, but they sat and did nothing. That's why you go after the right guy and money is not a problem as we have our own high school kid making $15 million before he took a snap....
I guess Im in the be patient camp and get the right coach. Michigan always has talent, but if we get another goof like Sherrone it wont matter. Look at Indiana, Scotty. They have waaaay less talent than most of the B1G and are undefeated. I know they have Mendoza, but more importantly, they have a good coach in Kurt Cignetti.
Ok......great....who do you want? don't give character traits, give me a name or names. Bear in mind, there's no perfect coach waiting for the phone to ring. you're going take some risk. You think LSU hit a home run with Lane Kiffin? WTF as Lane Kiffin ever won? And please don't reply with some NFL or college retreads that haven't done squat in 10 years or worse yet haven't coached in 10 years. No thanks to John Gruden
Enough with a hedge fund manager. if Michigan can't do better than Biff for 1 year, then shut the program down
Chowman: You deserve a medal for that comment. Concise and to the point. Made me cackle, but truth hurts.... your comments are much appreciated by me because you do not hold back, while providing insight into things from a different angle... someone was giving you grief for posting, that's what this blog is for .... sharing ideas. Mastermind is also a good poster, seems like I do not remember him long back ... maybe a "newbie". Keep up the good work. I been ready to quit for months .... but why be a quitter .... let's out coach and out spend the competition .... and maybe we will have to search space for some real competition later. {{{Ha Ha}}}
Biff is a band aid. Nothing more, nothing less.
Chowman: Poggi has a impressive pair of "man-tity's ....supported by a 60 inch waste (waist) .....could he even manage a whole season without collapsing? Who would give him mouth to mouth?
Not me, said the "not me ghost" from family circle cartoon.
Do we offer to double Cignetti's salary? The guy is kind of a duche. But it would cause John Mellencamp to sell a few more records to keep him at Indiana. π
@scotty to your point about Poggi. It’s true he may not make it an entire season due to health issues. On the plus side I’m pretty sure we don’t have to worry about that guy having affairs with 25 Y.O. Hotties & going crazy over that π± Just sayingπ
this team needs a black coach freeman from nd
