Michigan Tuesday: Exploring Leaving The Big10

Michigan has not been treated very well by the Big10 lately.  The Jim Harbaugh and SignGate thing was a disaster.  You can't suspend a head coach when he is flying with his team to play a Big Ten opponent.  The Big10 is punch drunk with greed and has zero leadership.  They brought in some fool with TV experience to increase TV revenue not lead a complex organization/league.

Michigan and USC are not in favor of this new capital investment deal and the Big Ten as recently as last week was saying they were moving forward with out 2 of its top brands.  Then Michigan signaled to the Big Ten, Thank you but if you intend to move forward, we intend to investigate leaving the conference.  I would assume USC did something similar.

Those actions have put a hold on the investment deal, as it should.  The Big10 better start respecting some of its top brands, as the Michigan's, USC's, OSU's run this conference.

The James Franklin experience

James is the first to find a new job after Penn State fired him earlier this season.  He is heading to Virginia Tech where they believe they can be a great program.  James is an interesting coach.  He leads the country in a coaches catorty of great recruiters but bad in game coaches.   It's a list you don't want to be on that includes the likes of  Matt Rhule and Mario Cristobal.  Can James recruit to Va Tech, that is the big question?  Is Virginia Tech happy with bowl game appearances then playoff appearances?  Those are the big questions that have yet to be answered.   The big winner in all of this was Penn State, who was on the hook for a nearly a $50M buyout which was negotiated down to $9M.

  • Sounds like Jordan Marshall has a shoulder injury and might miss Maryland but could be back for Ohio State.
  • Sherrone did confirm that Justice is done for the rest of the regular season.  He did not rule him out of the post season.  If that is a bowl game, he will be done for the season.
  • Marsh will return punts now.  I agree Morgan should be out of that role, but our #1 WR?

I think before we criticize Moore, and demand a new coach.. we should take in consideration what he's had to work with the last couple of years..last year team lost a ton from the previous year.this year team is extremely young with a freshman quarterback

They can demand all they want, it's not happening. But you can't tell them that. I'm not saying he's good or bad I'm just stating facts.

Then explain Curt Cignetti. You telling me Indiana had better returning players last year than Michigan did? You do realize we are in the age of NIL and TP, right? Coaches are no longer going to be afforded 4 or 5 years to turn things around, especially at big named programs. Now if you're a broke ass program, then yeah they'll be stuck with bad coaches, i.e. MSU

The elite programs are elite every year, including with young players. Don't want to hear excuses for Moore. Also realize he should have a little more time to prove the doubters wrong. Next year is that year. He'll have a much tougher schedule and a much more experienced team. And we'll see how he does in the portal. But, it's playoffs or bust next year. Besides, who you gonna get right now with all the big program openings? Bryce might choose the portal given his handcuffs. But fire Moore and he's as good as gone. Patience, just a little while longer. And let's see what he has for the $uckeyes. We weren't supposed to win last year either.

I'm not a James Franklin fan, but the VaTech hire could be brilliant. Winning 9 games a year at VaTech is totally acceptable for the fanbase and the ACC is garbage. Add in, he'll be recruiting the DMV area, which was a staple for him at PSU. If a football program's goal is winning a Naty, Franklin ain't your guy, but if you want a coach that can make you relevant again and by relevant winning record (8, 9, 10 wins) and a good bowl game. Then you could do worse than James Franklin.

Here's my counter to an opinion like Ron's. ok...last year the OL was garbage. It was wholly unacceptable. you want to blame the attrition...COOL. but why didn't you go and hammer the TP and fix that in the offseason? Don't give me a guy from Ferris State and a kid from Cal-Poly and tell he tried. The GLIAC and Big Sky. Get the bleep out of here with that.

The word on the street is that all of this was because the B1G was trying to save osu's bacon, because osu is in so much debt and needed a bailout. The buckeyes got into this huge debt by paying their players to stay (i.e., buying their 2024 national championship) and now they are broke. The buckeyes are the only school in the conference that is having this type of financial trouble. This could be considered gross mismanagement by osu. I believe that when Michigan won the 2023 national title, osu couldn't deal with it, especially losing to Michigan four straight years.

When Michigan and USC refused to go along with their "pay day loan" program for osu, the conference backed off for now. Now let's be clear, USC does not want to be a second tier team to PSU and they feel that just because they are a legacy school and having a good year this year that they are worth being a tier one school. Apparently the conference doesn't feel the same way.

The conference even threatened to put Michigan and USC out of the conference if they refused to go along with its proposal. However, when Michigan stated for the record that they are looking into "other options that includes independence," that's when the B1G backed off. USC is not the brand that Michigan is and if the conference loses Michigan and keeps USC then all you've got is osu and the rest of the Pac 12 rejects. USC couldn't even save their own Pac 12 conference and that's the reason they came to the B1G, so that reflects the power of their brand.

Michigan can! make it as an independent and do at least as well as Notre Dame. I have mixed feelings about Michigan leaving the B1G conference, but if the conference is always favoring osu over Michigan, then Michigan should consider moving on. That's my take on it. IMHO!!

Cockeye U being public, would think that the $numbers would be available to see. Would like to see if they are that far in the....scarlet. Also, pundits saying we go to Citrus if we lose to said Suckeye U. Potential opponent is Vandy. I like that. Vandy is a great story this year with a QB who has huge huevos. Yet, he'd likely sit the game out due to his draft stock. Without him, Vandy is a different team. We win. Any other SEC team? We lose.

Smart teams use the portal to fill gaps in their rosters. Moore doesn't use it very well, If Bryce gets hurt this year, Michigan will not have a backup with any experience. If he gets hurt next year, his replacement is probably playing high school football this year.

Don't forget that the Michigan alumni and fan base was calling for Jim Harbaugh to be fired just before winning the B1G conference and the National Championship. It took Harbaugh a few years to build his team and folks were restless. Harbaugh inherited Brady Hoke's team which was experienced but limited in talent and so he was able to win a couple of 10 win seasons but couldn't win against ranked teams with them. Even the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles fan base was calling for Nick Sirianni's firing during the same year that they won the Super Bowl while they were winning ugly games. This is not to say anything else other than it's prime aphasia and the facts speak for themselves. Yes, elite teams use freshman but they don't depend on freshman, they develop them. The general rule of thumb is that "You don't win with freshman and sophomores, you win with juniors and seniors." Now, Michigan has got to depend upon their freshman and sophomores (who are very talented) while developing them at the same time; so like it or not this is a developmental year. Whatever, they accomplish is a bonus. Furthermore, to call for Sherone Moore's firing "now" would be foolish and irresponsible. Yes, he's learning to be a head coach and it's unfortunate that he's never had that experience but Harbaugh knew that Sherone Moore has a brilliant football mind (and word was that the folks at Oklahoma all says the same thing and they wanted him to leave Michigan and come there in some capacity but he refused). My understanding is that Harbaugh knew that Sherone would one day be a head coach somewhere because he had the intelligence and knew that other schools were interested. So he wanted Michigan to keep him and that's why Harbaugh put the clause into his last contract that Michigan would hire Sherone after Harbaugh goes to the NFL. I believe that Sherone is building an outstanding team and we'll see it in the near future. IMHO!!!

Voice if Sherrone is such a brilliant football mind why has his game management been so bad? If he's such a brilliant football mind why for the 2nd straight year his OL been below average? His attempt to bolster the OL...a GLIAC and Big Sky player....excuse me for not being impressed. You sound like Sargento...wait he hasn't posted today. Is Sargent and the Voice one and the same?
