Michigan Thursday: Is GR3 Moving Up Draft Boards?

Robin Buckson / Detroit News

Glenn Robinson III has always had an NBA frame and the athleticism that you need to play in the league.  What concerned NBA scouts was the lack of a consistent jump shot, which pegged him as a late first rounder or early second.   Many scouts had him rated around the 30th best prospect in the draft.

One thing that could help GR3 draft status is the successful rookie year of his former teammate Tim Hardaway, Jr. with the Knicks.    Tim being the son of another NBA great also had similar questions coming out of Ann Arbor and was picked late in the first round by the Knicks.   Since hindsight is 20/20 if there was a re-draft Tim would have probably been a top 12 pick.   Will his success have any impact on GR#3?  It could.

Both players:
  • have former NBA fathers
  • played for John Beilein at Michigan
  • had concerns about their jumper coming out of college
  • shot well at the NBA combine
  • did well in their pre-draft team meetings

ESPN's Chad Ford said this recently about GR3:

Robinson III was one of the four or five players who helped themselves the most at the draft combine. His elite athletic abilities, a slimmed-down physique and some very solid shooting numbers in the drills all gave him a boost in the eyes of scouts. Not to mention the fact that according to multiple GMs he absolutely nailed the interviews.

GR3 is expected to meet and workout for the Hawks, Spurs, Bulls, Hornets and Bucks in the next week or so.

I expect the "Big Dog" is giving him the proper advice on the team meetings and workouts, which he seems to be nailing at the moment.   Let's hope the NBA takes a lesson from his former teammate and won't let him slide to late in the first round!

  • USC transfer RB Ty Isaac is planning a visit to Michigan next week.   Being able to get a waiver from the NCAA might be more difficult if he transfers to U of M vs. a school like Illinois or Northwestern.  We will see, he was very high on Michigan before he committed to USC in somewhat of a surprising move.
