Whitt strikes me as head coach that has a process and once you have a process, you follow it. First you hire your staff, then you protect your current roster, then you look to improve it. Now, those are my steps but if I had to guess Kyle's process is very similar to that.
The Michigan Football team has assembled an impressive list of Coordinators, Assistant Coaches (who can recruit off campus), and Staff Coaches (who have to recruit only on campus).
Just to recap:
OC: Jason Beck
WR Coach: Micah Simon
Asst. WR Coach: Marques Hagans (staff)
TE: Freddie Whittingham
OL: Jim Harding
RB: Tony Alford
QB: Koy Detmer Jr (staff)
RB: Fred Jackson (in his 28th year! - staff)
DC: Jay Hill
DE: Lewis Powell
DL: Coach Lou
LB: Alex Whittingham from the Chiefs
DB: Jernaro Gilford from BYU
S: Tyler Stockton from Boise State (Staff)
ST: Kerry Coombs
Make no mistake about it, Michigan is better in almost every coaching position above then they were just a few weeks ago. That is the good news. Now on to the bad news.
The transfer portal has opened and Michigan currently has 19 players in it.
- Ben Roebuck, OL
- Brady Prieskorn, TE
- Enow Etta, DL
- Jake Guarnera, OL
- Andrew Sprague, OT
- Jaden Mangham, S
- Devon Baxter, DE
- Kaden Strayhorn, OL
- Jesper Parker, RB
- Zeke Berry, CB
- Cole Sullivan, LB
- CJ Hester, RB
- Elijah Dotson, S
- Davis Warren, QB
- Jaydn Davis, QB
- Evan Boutorwick, LS
- Connor Jones, OT
- Freddie Moore, WR
- Semaj Morgan, WR
Please note: some players have announced they are heading to the portal but names are not offically in it yet. Brady and Cole are examples of that.
The two guys that stick out to Michigan fans are Cole Sullivan and Andrew Sprague. Both guys need to be a top priority keeping them in Ann Arbor with a larger bag of money. The next phase would be Guarnera and Berry, but if they can find big dollars elsewhere, I wish them well.
What is a bit scary is there is little to no buzz about Michigan adding players. Yes, there is some WR buzz and former Utah players but nothing like the other programs are seeing. Let's hope that starts moving in more of a positive fashion this week. Michigan has a ton of needs, including WR, OL, CB, LB, DL, and even TE now.
Another stat for you: Roughly 45% of all players that enter the transfer portal do not find a new school to transfer to.
- There are plenty of signs that Michigan Basketball is really good, the one that jumped out to me on Friday night with the win over 24th ranked USC was that Michigan played poorly and still won by 30 points. They very much struggled from 3 all night.
- Ernie Hausmann posts on facebook he has retired from football.
- Michigan commit Tariq Boney played well in the UA All Star game over the weekend.
- The Bells had a good week as each brother scored a TD. Kendrick in the Chessy and Ronnie for the Saints yesterday.
- Is Devin Bush the comeback player of the year in the NFL?
- Today is Black Monday for NFL Coaches. 2 already fired.

I've been wondering how many players entering the portal looking for playing time and riches end up never playing another down...
I bet Indiana will be grabbing some of our players. Cignetti is the Dusty May of football; you bring in players and have a great coach. The bottom line is we have a solid coaching staff so no matter what we are good. You know Michigan had been talking to kids/parents and yes agents about coming to Michigan. I am not sure I trust our genius GM as Indiana brought in 3 top OL for this season and we passed as supposedly our GM didn't value them for what they wanted yet he was ok putting all that money into a QB? That tells me it's arrogance or stupidity. You build the trenches and bring in a QB that can run your system.
Excellent question .... would like to know answer now that you have mentioned it. I know that when players opt for NFL they are history, but not so for portal. On Michigan's portal list, how many would be welcomed back with open arms? Sullivan to name one. Some players that want to come back might find the entrance door doubled locked and scholarship lost like a plastic bag in the wind (aka: Katy Perry). Bob or somebody help us out!!
I have heard that Michigan is at a distinct disadvantage in portal system. Michigan is on semester, while most colleges are on a quarterly, and transferring players lose significant credits. Any one care to elaborate?
"Bryce Underwood announcement coming ‘pretty soon,’ per Kyle Whittingham" - PLEASE TELL THIS KID AND HIS FAMILY TO LEAVE! This is a joke as he's getting a lot of money. Again, this is where our so called GM is an idiot. This is exactly why Harbaugh didn't recruit him as you didn't need him!
Someone (or others) made the comment before he was hired, that he might not pan out or worth the money they gambled on him.
I dont get involved in following the portal. Usually just a cash grab. Wake me when its over and I'll support the guys that are here.
Michigan may have been late to the coaching party, but you can rest assured that the new coaching staff WILL fill any and all player vacancies with their own players who do want to play for them. Next season just might be a transition year (who knows), but we can't cry over those players who do not want to be here. If they want to leave, then let them LEAVE!
We have a mantra (or a saying) that we hold fast to from the late great Bo Schembechler, "Those who stay will be champions!" If you can remember back in that day when then AD Don Canham brought in a new head coach Bo Schembechler to replace then coach Bump Elliott, Bo brought in a tough new way of doing things, difficult practices and strict rules. Many of the players quit the team and fans we worried, and it was because of that exodus that Bo came up with the response, "Those who stay..." so it was true then, and I'm believing that it is just as true now. So don't sweat it guys, it will be okay. IMHO!!!
I'm happy with the staff. I don't think the previous staff was very good. Alford was a must to keep Hiter and I think Fred Jackson was on Fritz Chrysler's staff. The rest of Moore's staff could go.
I'll be disappointed if Sullivan goes and of all the Michigan players in the portal he one that should garner the most interest. I'm not as high on Sprague as the OL wasn't that good. you want to tell me the new OL coach could coach him up? ok...I'll be good with that. I'm totally ok both Berry and Guarnera leaving. For every play Berry made, 3 plays he wasn't in the same area code as the receiver. And Guarnera didn't show me much other than he could get pushed 3 yards into the backfield.
I too noticed the lack of any real buzz about players coming to Michigan from the TP. now it might just be too early and they were waiting to see the staff, but that was one of the concerns with Whitt was he didn't do a lot in the portal. now some of that could be explained by Utah's NIL program. I thought I read were it was like only $8M? Imagine saying that 10 years ago....a school only have $8M to pay players to play there....Houston we have a problem.....
Most of the Michigan players in the TP have little game time experience. They are going to end up with lessor programs. Of the Michigan TP players, Cole Sullivan and Andrew Sprague are the top targets and if I'm the new DC and opening up the NIL checkbook and writing a big check to Cole.
so this is what I've heard. I don't have a direct inside to SH, but I was told BU was a Dave Portnoy production. He was a big part of brokering that deal and getting Larry Ellison's money to buy Bryce. That the University and specifically Sherrone weren't really pursuing Bryce. That BU fell in Michigan's lap thanks to Portnoy. I can't corroborate or refute that, its just what someone told me, that has in the past has had some inside news that turned out to be true.
I've heard in the past that the admissions office is very strict on transfer credits. Either not accepting certain schools class credits, or accepting them, but not being able to apply them to Michigan courses, i.e. you had to retake a class at Michigan that you took at your previous college. that's why for so long, Michigan only got grad transfers, as transfers already had their degree from their prior school
Probably a good position to take...
Chowman, that does make some sense because Portnoy is another AssClown and we never should've sold our soul for one kid because that's not how you win. Again, sounds true because Portnoy is the one who wanted Deion Sanders to be our coach so what does that tell you? Well, it tells me he's an AssClown...wait, did I mention that already.....
Patience. Whitt has a great staff, they will sift through the portal and find what they need. As for UM players leaving, there is not one player that proved themself irreplaceable. Sullivan showed great promise but not game-changing ability…..at least yet. So if they leave, it’s like Lays potato chips…..we’ll make more. Utah qb Dampier would be an option if BU goes. He just classed for 300 yards and ran for 150 in their bowl game…and at a better price than BU. Everyone panicked about the coaching search and we got a HR. Don’t panic over the portal. Whitt is taking us to the playoffs…bank it.
