Michigan Monday: The Messy Weekend and A Too Early Look at UW

The State did not have a good weekend for sports.  Tigers are out of the playoffs, Lions fell to the Chiefs,  2 LA teams beat 2 Michigan Universities in college football, Eastern and Western Michigan did post wins.    We will get to the Wolverines in a minute.  Time to discuss to James Franklin.

James is who he has always been and Penn State this weekend had enough and will cough up around $50M to walk him out the door.  James over 12 years in State College has been a great recruiter and a terrible in game coach.  He was that way day 1 and continued that in his 12th year.   Penn State continuing to pay him and extending him when other schools came calling is on them.  To quote the famous Dennis Green (RIP), "He is who we thought he was he was, and we let him off the hook" .  Until Sunday when they fired him.

Before we look at UW a couple more thoughts about the disaster in LA.

Michigan's worst defensive down is always 3rd and long.  What the F is happening when Michigan gets a team in 3rd and 22?  Do they completely lose focus? USC called a running play and it went for like 42 yards.  WTF!

I like Sherrone but if Baltimore ever gets tried of John Harbaugh, I would hire him during his farewell press conference.  John Harbaugh is the perfect fit for Michigan Football and would be my #1 candidate over any other coach in the sport.

I'm not sure what happens on some of these road games but Michigan seems to forget how to play football.  I will go on record, I hated the Wink hire.  Hated it.  Early last season I would've given him an F for the talent he had and the performance he was getting.  He of course flipped that and had a really nice finish with wins over Ohio State and Alabama.   With that said, have we flipped back?   What the hell was that on Saturday?  This is the healthiest the defense has been all year and guys were out of position and were not prepared for a a quick passing game.   Every NFL team runs that offense and Wink didn't know how to stop it?  There are two things that travel, defense and a run game.   Michigan was running ok but Wink left the defense in Ann Arbor.

Sherrone some of this is on you.  What the hell is going on? Why isn't the team prepared to play on the road.  BTW, did you F up the Quarterback situation in the portal again?  Is Mikey not even an option at this point?  Bryce was cleary banged up during the game.

Ok, I got that off my chest.  On the other hand, football is a weird sport and sometimes you can travel across country, fill an opponents stadium with fans, and get your ass handed to you by a lesser team because its football.  College Football is now professional football and pretty much anyone can win any Saturday.  Michigan certainly did not see that John Mateer in the Red Rivalry when they traveled to Oklahoma a few weeks ago.  Will be interesting to see how USC plays ND next weekend.   Michigan really made Wisconsin look decent last weekend.

On to Washington (5-1)

Best Win: Comeback against Maryland on the road
Best Loss: Ohio State in Seattle

Pass: 279.7 per (25th)
Run: 188.8 per (37th)

Score: 39.2 per (19th)
Give up: 19.7 (37th)

This team is a problem and plays right into all of Michigan's weaknesses.   They have a diminutive QB who is fast, likes to run, and can spin it.  I watched some of the Rutgers game and everything he did, I was thinking this is a nightmare for Michigan.   On the other hand, he does tend to turn the ball over and they have yet to play a decent team on the road yet.   Plus its a really bad body clock game for them with a noon kick.   So I'm saying there is a chance! 😀

  • I hope Justice ribs are ok and he can go this weekend.  We should find out more during Sherrone's presser today.  Also concerned about Payne.
  • Salt meet wound - Penn State QB Drew Allar is out for the year.
  • So IU is really good.  Curt will be flooded with job offers in 2 months.  (that is an example of how a team was really prepared for the moment and environment on the road)
  • Michigan is expected to be all over Penn State 2026 and 2027 commits.  Wasn't current PSU freshman TE Andrew Olesh very close to committing to Michigan?

First my final thoughts on James Franklin. Maybe one of the all-time college coaching grifters. Never has a coach fooled so many people and managed to not just stay employed, but get raises for being an absolute ass coach. not talking recruiting, I'm talking game management. His coaching style is best summed up as boobish.

Michigan's D will continue to get gashed on 3rd down, because Wink's an idiot. he doesn't understand that what he calls on 1st and 2nd down won't always work on 3rd down, especially 3rd and long. His over reliance on blitzing on every other down has been his undoing and why the NFL have zero interest in him when the Giants told him he didn't have to go home, but he couldn't stay there anymore. The hail mary in the nebraska game was typical Wink Martindale. Instead of playing prevent and only rushing 3, NOPE Wink's bring a blitz. It's not going to get better, he's a lot like Don Brown. He plays bully ball against lessor teams, but when the other team has skilled playmakers, he can get exposed.

Michigan unranked = Michigan irrelevant. Time for Moore to put up or shut up. The next few games should decide his future at UM.

A team with bad coaching and no talent will look bad every week. A team with talent and bad coaching can look really good or really bad every week. I expect a bounce back game against Washington, but Sherrone has never been a head coach. And never will be.

I just read up on Brent Keys at Georgia Tech. It took him 12 years at G.T. to finally become head coach, having almost every other coaching position from Offensive Coordinator to defensive line. Guess we can say Sherrone was born on 3rd base.

Michigan always gives head coaches 3 years. Gonna have to get real ugly for him to go after only his 2nd season. If it were me, Id fire him tomorrow.

Wink has too much free reign. An experienced head coach would straighten that shit out fast.

Moore should of never been anything more than an interim coach until the University could of done a proper coaching search. But Warde Manuel is a jackass AD too. He's turn everything he's touched into crap outside of the Dusty May hire. Guess its true, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.

Mastermind, the 3 year thing was prior to the portal and NIL. You can't let a coach drive a team into middle earth. It's worse in the B1G as so many teams are just garbage. A coach can have a winning record, but lose to every team on your schedule with a pulse. Hell I can see Michigan going 9-3 but losing to the 3 teams that were any good in OU, USC, and yeah most likely OSU. On paper that looks like a really good season, but the rest of the teams are ass.

Chowman It will be interesting to see how Child Molester U hires their new coach. Cignetti gonna be expensive, Keys at Georgia Tech ain't going anywhere. Hes an alum and will prob be there for life. But Penn St has the advantage of not having to wait til the season is over to start talking to people.

I do expect a bounce back against the Huskies, plus its a noon start in AA, so it'll be like them playing at 9am. I don't see us beating OSU this year. MSU and Purdue are wins. And we should beat both Northwestern and Maryland. key word is "should". so we go 9-3 and nobody will have the stomach to get rid of Moore, but we will have lost against the teams on our schedule that have a pulse.

Mastermind. yeah, I think one of the reasons they held on so long to Franklin is because they didn't want to hire a new coach. After BOB (Bill O'Brien) left PSU they kind of panicked and hired Franklin away from Vandy. Not sure if you remember, but at the time the alums and fans were underwhelmed by the Franklin hire.

Please fire Moore and bring back Harbaugh!!

Blue for life

Unfortunately Jim has a NCAA show cause penalty, so he wouldn't be able to coach for a while. I like Bob's idea with John Harbaugh. Same great coaching genes, without all the excess Jim baggage. that being said, I don't know why John would want to come coach in college at his age. The TP and NIL has made it a younger man's game now from a coaching perspective
